2 Corinthians 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Fellowship of the Holy Spirit with us. How do we fellowship with someone we don’t know, whose face we can’t see? The word “spirit” is ambiguous. It is a hard concept for us physical, finite thinking people to relate. We must study to learn Who the Holy Spirit is. We are told He is the Spirit of grace, of holiness, of glory, of son-ship and many other things. In John 14-16 Jesus talks about the Spirit and said the Spirit will be everything to us that He Himself is (and was while walking on this earth.) Jesus calls the Spirit the “Helper.” Though each aspect or person of the God head is distinct, all 3 (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) are entwined as One. Each one has different functions. The Father is the head, He has the timing of all creation in His hands. The Son is the Word of the Father. The Father spoke through the Son creating all that is. The Son came in the form of man to reunite man through forgiveness of sin so many could again fellowship with all of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit is the guide, counselor and comforter of man while man walks on this earth. The Spirits does this by indwelling in our spirits from the moment we receive the Son, Jesus into our hearts, minds and lives and receive His forgiveness for our separation and sins. Our question is are we availing ourselves of all the Holy Spirit would do in and through us?

Holy

1 Peter 2:5. you yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

The word “holy” means to be devoted to the service of God. It comes from the German word “helig” meaning “whole.” We are to live our lives in service to God. To do this we must be whole. We must have all parts of our being functioning. Our spirits cannot function without the in-filling of God’s Holy Spirit. It is His Spirit that brings wholeness to and in us. We receive His Spirit when we receive His Son, Jesus, into our hearts, minds and lives. The question is do we open the gift of His Spirit? It takes Bible study, prayer, meditation and encouragement of others to learn how to use the power and allow the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit to grow within and flow through us in holy service to God. Let us learn, grow and serve as God’s holy priesthood.

Purify With Fire

1Peter 1:22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Peter says we have to purify ourselves through obedience to the truth of God’s Holy Word. The word “purify” comes from the Greek word meaning “fire.” To purify something it takes fire. Fire purifies gold, intense heat sterilizes or purifies. It is the fire of God’s Holy Spirit that purifies us. Through His Holy Spirit we are enabled to obey His Word. One of the signs our souls are purified is a real love for God’s family of believers. What show our love for others? Peter says it is in laying aside everything that hinders growth and specifies malice, guile, hypocrisies, envies, and evil speaking. Before we think we are doing pretty well we must examine our thoughts, words and actions. Do we say critical things of others? Do we really walk out in our hearts what we claim to confess with our mouths? Are we consistent? We must ask ourselves these questions with regularity. Then, as we find ourselves falling short of these signs of purity, we must confess them to God, ask His forgiveness and ask for the fire of His Holy Sprit to work deep within us. God commands us to be holy as He is Holy. Are we willing for the Holy Spirit’s fire of purification to burn His holiness in us?

Every Effort

Heb 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

The football play-off between Houston and Baltimore was on our TV. I couldn’t help noticing how much effort each person on each team was making. They were putting all they had into the playing of the game in hope of winning the temporary prize of being the best. That made me think about how much effort we, as Christians, put into our life. Paul tells us in Hebrews to make every effort not only to live in peace with all men but also to be holy. Being holy means we are set apart for God. Paul continues to tell us that without holiness no one will see the Lord. We must be set apart for Him. This takes effort. We cannot just go with the tide of our culture. We can’t just allow our circumstances to direct our lives. We must make an effort to be set apart for God through prayer, worship and knowledge of the Scriptures. Our question today is how much effort are we putting into knowing more about God and serving Him?
