Know and Experience

Philippians 3:10. My aim is to know him, to experience the power of his resurrection, to share in his sufferings, and to be like him in his death,

To know Jesus means not just to know and accept the facts of Who He is and how He walked this earth. To know includes experiencing Him through our walk on this earth. We are to experience the power of His resurrection which experiencing His power over sin. We are to share in His sufferings. How often we complain when we feel mistreated or unappreciated, yet He didn’t open His mouth at His own defense. We are to be like Him in His death; be willing to face wherever He leads us and whatever He asks us to do in the confidence that physical death is not a threat for we who have Jesus as our Lord already have begun our eternal life with God. Our question is how are we doing? If you’re with me you can only join me in saying “ouch,” help mr Holy Spirit to really know my Lord.

Even Our Dreams

Genesis 28:16. Then Jacob woke up and thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, but I did not realize it!”

We are so very distracted by things. We look and don’t really see. We listen and don’t really hear. Sometimes God must resort to dreams to get us to listen and really hear. The sleep experts say it is important for our body and mind to get enough sleep. It is also important for our spirits. Even when we do pray and meditate there are times where we just can’t hear God. We want to but distractions and preconceived ideas hamper our hearing. God-given dreams can get through those distractions if we know what to do. Often we wake up from a dream and are immediately distracted. If we would keep paper and pen by our bed and develop the habit of writing down the dream as soon as we wake we will have it to meditate on and be able to ask God’s direction Holy Spirit to give us it’s meaning. We know God is everywhere, even in our dreams. No place and nothing is hidden from Him. May we continually realize His presence.

Pursue the Kingdom

Matthew 6:33. But above all pursue his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

The word “pursue” means to seek to obtain or to go after. So many think this verse means to seek salvation and once had just enjoy life on this earth. What it means is to diligently go after the Kingdom of God; to live and work in His Kingdom; to be part of His Kingdom. His Kingdom is within us when we receive Jesus Christ, God the Son, into our hearts and minds as our Lord – the director of all we say and do. So many of us try to live in 2 kingdoms.mmwe are comfortable with the carnal world and don’t want to leave it. We hear about God’s Kingdom and want to visit it from time to time but fear we would have to give up too much to stay in it. We forget the fruits that art in His Kingdom and confuse the counterfeit fruits in our carnal kingdom. Once we really believe what Jesus says and Who God really is we will become thirsty and hungry enough to pursue His Kingdom at all cost. Our question is which kingdom do we want to live in, the world with its counterfeit fruits or God’s with the real fruits of love, peace, joy, etc.?

Not Everyone

Matthew 7:21. “Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter into the kingdom of heaven-only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

You can be a church member all your life and still not know God. I know. I was. I never missed church. I served on all sorts of committees. I directed many events and ministries. I served as a paid employee. Yet I didn’t know God personally. I did believe Jesus came to this earth as God’s only begotten Son but I had no concept of Him as Lord. He was basically my insurance policy for eternal life. I would pray for situations then work hard to bring them around in my own strength. I was taught I had the ability to do anything I wanted and if I wanted it done right I must be the one to do it. What an amazing change took place in my life when someone shared with me the meaning of Lordship. Now Jesus is my director through His Holy Spirit. My heart aches for so many church members who think membership and attendance is all that is required. My heart aches for God when Jesus has to tell Him a person is not His. The question is do you really know Jesus as your Lord? Do you let Him direct your life? If so, are you sharing this with others around you? Through God’s Holy Spirit we have the power to let others know. Oh that all will come to really know Jesus as Lord.

Job 42:5. I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye has seen you.

Job obeyed God’s commandments because he was taught to do so. We can also obey through teaching. God wants more than obedience. God wants our fellowship, our love and our worship. Our question is do we think if we live good, moral lives we will have eternal life with God? God says our good works are as filthy rags. We sinful beings cannot be good enough on our own. It takes seeing God with spiritual eyes given us by His Holy Spirit. We don’t see Hod in a physical sence but we see Him in a spiritual sence. We see His love, power, forgiveness and character. When we see God this way we realize how really filthy we are. How do we get clean enough for fellowship with God? There is only one way. The way is through the shed blood of God’s only Son, Jesus Christ. When we accept Jesus as our Lord ans Savior our filthyness is covered with His blood and our sins cleansed through forgiveness. Then, with the help of His Holy Spirit we can learn to imitate the way He walked on this earth. We learn to become “little Christs” which up is what the word “Christian” means.

All Like Peter

John 21:7. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” So Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, tucked in his outer garment (for he had nothing on underneath it), and plunged into the sea.

Oh how I love Peter.  He is so impulsive.  The downside of being impulsive is we often act or speak before we think or consider the cost.  Peter is the one who said he would die with Jesus before he would dessert Him yet he denied His Lord 3 times in one night.  Many times we get wrapped up in the emotion of an event or relationship and plunge headlong without thinking or counting the cost.  How many times have we promised God or anyone else we would do something but we never follow it up?  Someone asks us to pray for something and we say we will.  We go on our way and quickly forget to pray.  It may be a visit, a phone call or a need at church but we fail.  Our question is do we recognize the Peter in each one of us?  Tomorrow we’ll read how our Lord deals with this issue.

Preparing for Home

2 Corinthians 5:8-10. Thus we are full of courage and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So then whether we are alive or away, we make it our ambition to please him.  For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be paid back according to what he has done while in the body, whether good or evil.

There are only 3 more days before we begin what the Christian Church calls Holy Week.  We’ve looked at a few verses in God’s written word about knowledge and wisdom and hopefully have decided to seek them through study, meditation, prayer and coming together with other believers.  We read Jesus grew in knowledge, stature and wisdom in the same way and also through obedience.  It’s a question of where we want to spend our time and efforts.  God has it for us to receive but we must commit to do our part.  I pray you will join me in continual growth as we wait and prepare for our Lore Jesus to take us home.

Knowledge Bearing Fruit

Colossians 1:10. so that you may live worthily of the Lord and please him in all respects – bearing fruit in every good deed, growing in the knowledge of God,

Pleasing God in all aspects of our lives.  What a high goal that is.  That means in our thoughts as well as our actions or inactions.  Where do we get the knowledge of what pleases God?  We get it through the Holy Spirit in prayer and meditation on the scriptures.  As we gain knowledge and insight the fruits will grow and bear more fruit and as they grow and bear more fruit our knowledge will grow.  Growing in knowledge takes action on our part.  Our question is will we choose to take the time and effort required?    Knowledge cannot grow by osmosis.  A fruit tree will die if left unattended.  Fruit must be picked to continue to bear more fruit.  Let us choose to ripen our fruit through prayer and meditation on God’s Word and actively use that fruit through our actions so the Holy Spirit can grow more fruit within us.

Knowledge of Salvation

Luke 1:77. to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins.

What beautiful knowledge – to know for sure our sins are forgiven by God.  How do we get that knowledge of assurance?  We get it through the gift of God’s Holy Spirit when we accept His Son, Jesus, as Lord and Savior.  It takes a while for most of us to really believe we are forgiven and not keep bringing up the same sin over and over.  That is primarily because we fail to forgive ourselves.  Self-forgiveness is a necessary step in believing God’s forgiveness.  Another necessary step is to forgive others.  When we pray the Lord’s Prayer we ask God to forgive us in the same measure we forgive others.  Our question is since God forgives who are we not to forgive others and ourselves.  Let’s make sure we walk in total forgiveness.  This is salvation which leads to lives spent in eternity in the very prince of God.

Source of Knowledge

Today I have all,of Psalm 139.  This is someone who really appreciates the Source of knowledge and understands the limit of man’s knowledge.  It is well,worth our time to read it.

Psalm 139
O Lord, you examine me a and know.
You know when I sit down and when I get up;
even from far away you understand my motives.
You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest;
you are aware of everything I do.
Certainly my tongue does not frame a word
without you, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it.
You squeeze me in from behind and in front;
you place your hand on me.
Your knowledge is beyond my comprehension;
it is so far beyond me, I am unable to fathom it.
Where can I go to escape your spirit?
Where can I flee to escape your presence?
If I were to ascend to heaven, you would be there.
If I were to sprawl out in Sheol, there you would be.
If I were to fly away on the wings of the dawn,
and settle down on the other side of the sea,
even there your hand would guide me,
your right hand would grab hold of me.
If I were to say, “Certainly the darkness will cover me,
and the light will turn to night all around me,”
even the darkness is not too dark for you to see,
and the night is as bright as day;
darkness and light are the same to you.
Certainly you made my mind and heart;
you wove me together in my mother’s womb.
I will give you thanks because your deeds are awesome and amazing.
You knew me thoroughly;
my bones were not hidden from you,
when I was made in secret
and sewed together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw me when I was inside the womb.
All the days ordained for me
were recorded in your scroll
before one of them came into existence.
How difficult it is for me to fathom your thoughts about me, O God!
How vast is their sum total!
If I tried to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
Even if I finished counting them,
I would still have to contend with you.
If only you would kill the wicked, O God!
Get away from me, you violent men!
They rebel against you and act deceitfully;
your enemies lie.
O Lord, do I not hate those who hate you,
and despise those who oppose you?
I absolutely hate them,
they have become my enemies!
Examine me, and probe my thoughts!
Test me, and know my concerns!
See if there is any idolatrous tendency in me,
and lead me in the reliable ancient path!
