Matthew 7:21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ c will enter the kingdom of heaven, d but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven (New International Version)

I appreciate comments but don’t post them so those commenting have a choice of privacy. There was a question on the post-entitled “Advent 24.” The question was, “How do I do that?” Since the subject was making Jesus Lord of our lives I assume that is what the questioner was asking. To make Jesus Lord of our lives we must first believe He is the only begotten Son of God and came down both as fully God and as fully man in the form of a baby to grow and experience all we experience. We must believe He died on the cross for all of our sins and that He physically rose from the dead so we could have eternal life in His very presence. After belief comes accepting the belief and confessing we are sinners and receiving His forgiveness for our sins. Then we ask Him into our hearts and minds, ask Him to fill us with His Holy Spirit and ask Him to be the Lord – the director – the ruler of our lives. We may not feel anything on an emotional level for faith is not an emotion. Faith is the train engine that leads the way. Emotions are the caboose that follows along at the end of the train. Some trains are longer than others. Do not be concerned about feelings. Feelings will eventually fall into place. It is our will to believe and accept and trust God to bring all into proper relationships. After doing this we must spend time in prayer with Him, which means listening as well as talking. It takes time to learn to recognize His voice within us and I find writing a journal helps. Write your prayers and write what comes into your mind after. Eventually you will hear and recognize. It is also important to become familiar with the Holy Bible – the Manufacturers Instruction Book. Go to a store or on the Internet and look at the same verses in several translations and pick the one that speaks to you the best. My prayers are with you as you seek to make Jesus Lord of your life.

Cleaning Time

Philippians 3:13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead

Ever since a young child I have always dedicated the week between Christmas and New Years to clean my room. As an adult I go through the house and donate or trash what can be donated or trashed. After I met Jesus as my Lord I started adding something to the house cleaning. I now include spiritual cleaning during that week. I take time to ask God what in me needs to have His light shed and where I need His cleansing. This time goes deeper than my normal times of confession and repentance through the year. I have a long way to take hold of the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit, which reflect His image, but I am determined to push on with Him. Won’t you join me?

Isaiah 40:3 A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.

This world is a wilderness.  People are running wild.  They are full of fear and anger.  The normal tendency is to look out for “me” – number one.  Everyone else can look out for themselves.  We are in a desert without living water.  Those of us who have found the Source of the Living Water – Jesus Christ, God’s Son – are called to be a voice calling to all who will listen.  We have the ministry of making on this earth a highway for our God.  Only a few travel country roads.  Highways are built for many.  We are to be sure all who are within hearing distance of us hear about Jesus.  He has come on this earth and He is coming back.  Are we ready?  How about our families, neighbors, friends and strangers we meet?  Are we letting our voices be heard?  Let us speak out.

John 3:21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

Before I came to Jesus as my Lord, I played my life as many different characters.  I grew up in church and rarely missed a Sunday.  I was very active as a leader and sometimes an employee in churches.  I believed Jesus to be the Son of God but I didn’t understand the concept of surrender to Him as Lord.  What others saw in me was not who I was but who I wanted them to think I was.  I also was sure to get the credit for all “I did” in the church.  After I came to Jesus as my Lord, after I really surrendered my life, my heart and my mind to Him I no longer wanted to play my life out as other characters.  Now, what people see in me is what they get; is what I am.  I also am sure to acknowledge that all I do is by God’s grace alone.  I can do no good thing in and of myself.  As part of our Advent preparation let us take time to ask God to reveal any shadows in us that still need His Light.  This will help us to be part of His preparation for His Son’s coming to establish His Kingdom on earth.

Isaiah 2:3 Many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.”

Many peoples (all races and cultures) are called to come to the mountain of the Lord through His Son Jesus.  Jesus came to teach us God’s ways so we could walk in the way God designed for us.  All people are called but not all hear and not all who hear respond.  Those of us who have responded have a job to do.  We are to lead others to the mountain of our Lord – Jesus.  As we learn His ways for us we are to share what we learn with others.  Our question is are we walking in the ways He has taught and is teaching us?  We cannot help others if we are not walking it ourselves.  Let’s check our walk and then share with someone else today.

Mt 1:21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

He will save His people from their sins.  What a wonderful thing.  There is no way we can save ourselves from our sins.  There is no way we can ever be good enough.  Jesus was sent by God the Father to save His people from their sins.  Who are His people?  His people are those who believe Jesus is the Son of God, that He came to earth to die on the cross and take on our sins, that they want Him to be the Lord of their lives and have taken Him into their hearts and minds and desire to walk in obedience to all He said.  When we have done this we become ‘His people.”  Each of us must answer if we are among His people.  We must do more than believe and accept.  We must live the way He showed and taught us to live.  Advent is quickly coming to a close.  Let each of us be sure we are ready to help prepare the way for our Lord.

Ephesians 5:10 and find out what pleases the Lord

hen we love someone we want to please him or her.  We want to make them happy.  Do we think about pleasing the Lord?  Most of us are more consumed with pleasing ourselves, the maybe others and finally we might think of pleasing God.  In Ephesians we are told we can find out what pleases God.  How do we do that?  We read and study and meditate on His written word, the Bible.  It is full of ways to please God.  Most of us are more concerned with offending another person than we are of offending God.  We fail to witness to God’s goodness to us and His mercy because we fear another person may not agree or want to hear what we have to share.  When our children do something good we are quick to share it with others.  How much more should we share God’s goodness to us with others.  Advent is a good time to develop the habit.  I’m sure there is at least one thing every day you can share with at least one person to attest to God’s goodness and mercy.  Let us be pleasing to God.

Ps 43:4 Then will I go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight

The verse before this talks about God sending His Light to guide us.  He has sent His Light, Jesus to us and He remains with us through His Holy Spirit and His written word, the Holy Bible.  The question for us is do we look to the Light.  Do we seek His guidance or go off on our own?  During the Advent season there are many things to remind us to look to the Light.  It is when we look to the Light and follow it we are filled with joy and God becomes our delight.  The more we look, the more we follow the more joy and the more we will take delight in our Lord God.  But His Light is not for us alone.  It is for us to share with others so they will also look to the Light.  Today let us be sure to share His Light with at least one other.

Ps 27:4 One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.

It’s hard to believe we’re already 10 days into the Advent season.  This is a season when we hear so many “I wants” not only from children but also from adults.  We are bombarded with “buy this” on TV, radio, Internet ads and newspapers.  During this season is a good time to contemplate what our greatest desire is.  The Psalmist knew his desire – to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life.  We start dwelling in the house of the Lord the moment we receive His Son, Jesus Christ, into our hearts and lives.  We gaze upon His beauty as we look at other believers around us.  Are we so engrossed in the business of life that we fail to see God in all around us?  Let us ask His Holy Spirit to give us spiritual vision to really see and be aware of His relationship to us and ours to Him.  Let us learn to enjoy the beauty of our Lord.

Ro 15:6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We celebrate the 8th day of Advent – the start of our 2nd week.  We are told to join together with one heart and collectively, as one mouth, glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  When we are together with other Christians what do we do with our mouths.  We seem to find a lot to talk about and even some things to disagree about.  We spend a good bit of time talking to each other.  How much time do we spend speaking and singing praises to God?  How much time to we testify to His glory by giving Him praise for what He has been doing in and through us since we last met?  Let us on this day share with more than one of God’s love and give Him the glory for what we have in our lives – freedom to do this.  There are so many things He has given us and blessed us with.  Let us glorify Him – not so much because of what He has given us as more for what He has done for us – the One Whose birth as a man we prepare to celebrate.
