Fertile Ground

Matthew 13:4-7. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

God provides us with a variety of ways to learn more about Him so we can be one His reflection. Our question is what kind of soil are we? When we read a devotion or scriptures do we allow the business of the rest of the day crowd out what we read? When we listen toa sermon do we really listen and take notes sower can meditate on it later? When we go about our day do we allow God to fertilize the seeds through the various circumstances He allows to come our way? Let us be sure to keep our soil fertile through prayer, confession and meditation that we don”t miss any of the ways God chooses to teach us.

Be Ready

1 Peter 3:15. But set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess.

Always be ready. Be ready to bring Christ to all you meet. How can we always be ready? We must continually confess anything that would separate us from God; any action in-action, thought or word. After each confession we must ask for a refilling of God’s Holy Spirit. We must also know what is written in God’s word, the Holy Bible through study and meditation. Our question is are we willing to be honest with ourselves in confession to God and willing to spend the time learning His instructions for living? If our living doesn’t show the reflection of Christ Jesus we won’t be asked. Let us be sure to be ready to encourage a struggling believer or help someone into God’s family.

Be Still and Know

Psalms 46:10. He says, “Stop your striving and recognize that I am God! I will be exalted over the nations! I will be exalted over the earth!”

We are always in a rush. We eat fast food. We push buttons and expect things to happen instantly. We get impatient with our computers because they are not fast enough. We read scripture fast, take a quick stab at meditation, send up a quick prayer then hurry off to something else. When go to church and want to hurry through to get on to the rest of our day. Occasionally we might wonder why we seldom really know the presence of our God. We think our awareness should be automatic and our growth in Him should be fast. We think it is our fast striving thar brings us into a closer awareness of God. It is God and God Who can bring us closer to His presence. We must quit our fast-paced striving and be still and quiet in His presence to recognize Him. Our question is how long are we willing to sit quietly in His presence? We need to start small and build up. It takes time to learn to be still and quiet and give our ears and mind over to God to hear, feel and know Him. Let us choose to slow down and be drawn closer to our God.

Luke 2:19  But Mary treasured up all these words, pondering in her heart what they might mean.

We go back to Mary, the virgin who gave birth to Jesus.  She looked and listen to all that was happening to and around her and all that was said to and around her and treasured them.  She did not understand what it all meant.  She had no idea that her Son would end up dying for our sins.  She just kept everything in her heart as a treasure and wondered at them.  We too can treasure all we read, see and hear God doing.  But we can understand some of it because God has given us His Holy Spirit.  We have the wonderful treasure of His written word, the Holy Bible.  Our question is do we treasure it?  Do we treasure it enough to read it and contemplate on the meaning?  When we read it in prayer God will give us understanding of how to apply  what we read for where we are in our walk with Him on this earth.  Let us more than treasure and ponder.  Let us meditate, praise worship and obey.

Precious Thoughts

Psalms 139:17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Are His thoughts really precious to us? To be precious means they are of great value. We are so full of our own thoughts. We are so concerned about what others think. Do we give God’s thoughts first place in our hearts and minds? Do we even know or seek to know any of His thoughts. As we study and meditate on His written Word, the Holy Bible, we start to learn some of the thoughts of God. As we learn to pray and listen He reveals some of His thoughts to us through His Holy Spirit. Are His thoughts precious enough to us for us to take the time to listen? Our question is will we allow our own thoughts and the thoughts of others push out the thoughts of God from our hearts and minds. Let us indeed ask Him to make His thoughts truly precious to us and seek to know them with all our being.

Six Woes

Luke 11: 37-54 Six Woes spoken by Jesus.

As Jesus takes His final walk toward Jerusalem He is concerned with our hearts. We tend to be concerned with how we look on the outside and how others perceive us. We pay attention to big things and tend to pass of things we consider small. God is more concerned about what is inside of us. He doesn’t want us to neglect any part of His Word. It is good to read and meditate on the six woes recorded in these verses. As we meditate on them we must be hones with ourselves. We like to think we are thinking and doing all we should but we are good at deceiving ourselves. Self-honesty is hard. When we put our faith in God and are assured of His love and His power we can dare to be honest with ourselves. God already knows. We must come to the place of knowing what is and isn’t in us so we can receive the power from God. Let us slow down today and spend some time meditating on these verses and listening to God’s Holy Spirit as He shows us our lack. It is His Spirit that will fill us so our hearts, minds and actions will be in accord with God.

Falling Into Sin

Dt 6:5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

Why do we keep falling into sin?  We don’t love God passionately.  We don’t seek Him with all our hearts, souls and strength.  We have been so indoctrinated with the “daddy” image of God we tend to forget Who He really is.  We become lazy and complacent.  We don’t mediate on His written Word to discern His plan for us.  It takes hard work to grow.  We are not passionate enough about God to be willing to work hard.  We have become soft and lazy in our complacency.  The question is when are we going to take God seriously enough to really stand in awe of Him and roll up our sleeves and get busy learning how to follow His statues and really put Him first in our thoughts and actions?
