Galatians 5:14 For the whole law can be summed up in a single commandment, namely, “ You must love your neighbor as yourself.”

We live in a membership neighborhood so loving our neighbor is not that hard to do.  Both sides of us and across the street go to our church.  But Jesus was asked, “Who is my neighbor?” and we probably all fall very short of His answer.  Our first question is do we love ourselves?  There are plenty of people who harm others because they no longer have hope for themselves.  They are angry and their own lives no longer matter to them so others don’t either.  We can be very selfish without loving ourselves.  It really takes God’s love in us to enable us to love ourselves.  Then there is loving our “neighbors” the way God has put love for ourselves in us.  To love someone we must want the best for them.  The best is the love of God.  Sometimes that love is only conveyed by our reaching out to their needs: food, shelter, jobs, education, acceptance.  It is so easy to smugly say they got in trouble on their own.  I’m so glad that is not God’s attitude.  Before I asked Jesus to enter my life I got in troubles on my own.  Yet, in spite of me, my attitudes and my actions, God reached out to me through Jesus, forgave me, adopted me into His family and gave me the gift of His Holy Spirit to love and be loved.  Are we willing to accept God loves His creations so much that He gave His Son, Jesus  out of love for each and every one of mankind on this earth?  Who are we not to allow His Holy Spirit to reach out through us in love.  If we ask Him, He will give us the wisdom needed to reach out to each one He sends our way.  Let us embrace the potential that all are called to rebirth and reshaping into the image of God.
