Who’s First

Genesis 22:2. God a said, “Take your son-your only son, whom you love, Isaac and go to the land of Moriah! Offer him up there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I will indicate to you.”

God knew how much Abraham loved his son. God also knew how much Abraham loved Him. God wanted Abraham and Isaac to see their priorities. God wants and deserves to be first in our hearts, minds and lives. Our question is where does God really come in our own heart, mind or life? It’s hard to really be honest with ourselves. We want to say God is first and above all else with us but is that a wish or an actuality? We need to take time often to check our priorities So many distractions slip in and clamor for our devotion. A dangerous pray to our idols is “God, help me put You above all else.” He will. Our life and values will change but we will never regret for we will be full of God through His Holy Spirit.

Sweet Fragrance

Ephesians 5:2. and live in love, just as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God.

There’s a lot in this one verse but what the emphasis is today is “fragrant offering.”  Since we no longer burn sacrifices or bring produce to the altar what does God mean when He says we are to be a fragrant offering in the way Christ gave?  The Bible says a lot about fragrant offerings.  Song of Songs 1:13. My beloved is like a fragrant pouch of myrrh spending the night between my breasts is speaking about us.  We are His beloved.  2 Corinthians 2:14. But thanks be to God who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and who makes known through us the fragrance that consists of the knowledge of him in every place says our passing knowledge of Him to others is fragrance to Him.  In Psalms 141:2 we read our prayers are “like incense, my uplifted hands like the evening offering!”  Also in Revelation 8:4 “The a smoke coming from the incense, b along with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angels hand.”  Our question is how much fragrance are we passing to God?

Give to Caesar or God

Luke 20:25 “Caesar’s,” they replied. He said to them, “Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s (The Holy Bible, New International Version.)

Even though the cross is in sight of Jesus, He continues teaching. The religious leaders continue trying to trap Him into saying the wrong thing. Here they are trying to get Jesus to say it is wrong to pay taxes – which money should go to the temple. We seem to think that the tithe is only about money. God already owns all in creation. He does not need anything. We do use money to maintain places to come together and worship and for things to help us learn. We also use money to give to others in need of food, housing, etc. But the tithe, what Jesus wants us to give to God, encompasses more than money. He wants our hearts, our minds and our time. None of that is really ours but we are in possessions of hearts mind and time because of His grace. He is asking us to be wise stewards of all of our being and give all to God through obedience and worship. We are to be honest in our taxes paying to our country what is due. We are also to be honest in our churches. We don’t go to church to see what we can get out of it or what it can do for us. We go to give ourselves to God. Yes, we give our money tithes and offerings but we must be sure we give our time and talents with a thankful heart to God for His allowing us to use the time and talents on this earth as we learn more of Him. Our question is what is our attitude in our giving of anything?
