Luke 14:33 In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Ouch. This is a hard statement. What could Jesus mean by saying we must give up everything we have to be His disciple? He doesn’t mean we are to give up everything we own to others. He does mean we are to give up ownership of everything. It is more an attitude problem with us than an ownership problem. We are to recognize all we have is because of His grace, mercy and provision. We are merely stewards of the material possessions entrusted to us. We had a guest who really liked a picture on our wall. When he left I took the picture down and gave it to him. He was very embarrassed. I replied,” It’s on loan from God and it’s just as much yours as ours. Hang it on your wall and let it bless you.” Can I say I have this attitude about all the things in my possession? Sorry to say, no, but I’m learning. We are stewards of all God gives us. This includes finances. Our question is are we willing to live within the means God bless us and are we willing to share His blessings and gifts with others? Being in debt distracts us from the walk God would have us take. I have this hope that when we, as individuals throughout this country get out of debt and stay out it will pass up to our government. Before I met Jesus I was an active church member and worker. We had a guest speak to our Sunday School Class He was a young, red-bearded man in jeans and a tee shirt. He shared how he even asked God what pair of shoes he should buy when he needed shoes. I thought that was silly. Now I don’t think so. Who knows best what we really need? God created this world and everything in it. That makes Him the owner of all things. Let us praise Him and become good stewards being willing and generous to those He sends our way.
