The Race

Hebrews 121-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Modern life seems like a race. We seem to have so many things we think we must accomplish. This is not the race Paul is writing about. We are in a race where we are running away from self and to Jesus. Most all sin arises out of a desire to please our own self. We are full of self. What’s in it for me? Why me? We see self rise up in rush hour when drivers don’t want to delay by the few seconds it takes to allow someone in front of them. We see self everywhere we look. We especially see self when we look into a mirror. We can only escape the over-active love of self by keeping our eyes on Jesus. He had His eyes on us when He died on that cross. Let us not be lazy. Let us do our warm-up exercises for the race we must run. We warm-up through prayer, meditation and Bible study. Let us congregate with other believers who will cheer us on as we run our race. Are you ready to run? Are you warming-up every day? Make sure you are headed the direction of the gold crown, the cross of Jesus.

After the Prize

1 Corinthians 9:24. Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win.

I really enjoy the Olympics. I enjoy the different venues nu I enjoy the bios on the athletes even more. They share how they are of single mind and single purpose, using all that is within them and availing themselves of any help from others to have a slight chance of winning the prize. The prize they are after will be outdone by another in a few years. As believers and followers in God’s Son, Jesus Christ, we are also in a race for a prize. This prize will be ours for all eternity. We must ask ourselves how single-minded and single purpose date we in attaining this prize from God? Are we availing ourselves of all within us? Are we taking advantage of help and support from those around us?

Gold Medal

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us runwith perseverance the race marked out for us.

The hpye of the Olympics brought back to mind this poem I wrote years ago.

Gold Medal

They give their all to win the gold
No matter what the cost
Their chance is slim so few can win
Yet they still pay the cost
And when they’ve won they’re glory’s sung
They find it ever brief
For though they did the best that time
There’s someone right behind.

I’m in a race to win the gold
That also has a cost
My chance is great for Christ did win
He paid the greatest cost
When I have won,
God’s glory’s sung
It will not end with time
But do I give my best for Him
Or do I lag behind?

My God, help me desire You
More than they long to win
Help me keep the laws You’ve made
To keep me safe from sin.
Help me keep my eyes on You
So my goal I can win
And when I win they’ll be no end
You will have brought me in.

No Difference

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

I was on cafeteria duty at our local high school. I observed a boy sitting at a table by himself. All around him we tables full of laughing and chatting teens. I hurt for this boy. He is nice and quiet and smart but because he speaks a little differently he is treated differently. God says we are all alike. It doesn’t matter how we look. We can have long or short hair, big or small noses, plain or stuttering speech or anything else but we are all equal in His sight. Since all are equal with us in God’s sight should we treat people differently according to their looks, speech, beliefs or race? Next time you feel like giving someone a cold shoulder let’s remember God loves them as much as He loves you. Instead of avoiding them reach out and let yourself see what God sees.

Eyes Front

Phil 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

We went to a junior high track meet to watch one of our grandsons compete.  He ran two races, the 800-meter and the mile.  Every child grows at different rates. Our grandson is still short compared to most of the other competitors.  They are at an advantage with their long legs.  But what really counts is our effort.  He ran valiantly and stayed focused on his goal – the finish line.  Our spiritual life is very much like this.  We each grow at different rates and times in our lives.  What counts is our focus.  A runner learns not to turn his head to either side or look behind.  Every turn of the eyes away from the goal makes him loose time.  We so often turn our eyes away from our goal – consistent oneness with God through Jesus Christ.  Every time we turn our eyes away from God we loose valuable time.  We have to take time to refocus and return to the reality of His presence.  During lent let’s be more conscience of the race we are running and the goal we are seeking.
