Acceptable Sacrifice

Isaiah 1:11. “Of what importance to me are your many sacrifices?” says the Lord. “I am stuffed with burnt sacrifices of rams and the fat from steers. The blood of bulls, lambs, and goats I do not want.

This verse can’t possibly apply to us. We don’t do animal sacrifices. What about sitting in church and going through the movements of worship when our minds and/or hearts or elsewhere. Maybe we’re thinking about what someone’s wearing, what someone said to us or did to us or where we’re going to eat after. Maybe we’re looking at our watches wondering how much longer. If our mind’s on anything except God this verse applies to us. Admit it. We’ve all been guilty. Offering the sacrifice of praise means putting all else aside and praising God with all our heart, mind and body. Our question is do we really want to put our praise and worship of God ahead of all else? Hoe about trying it for just one hour? Start small and grow.

Hebrews 13:15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that confess his name. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

We begin our church service singing, “We bring the sacrifice of praise into the House of our Lord…and we offer up to You, the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and we offer up to You the sacrifices of joy.” The question was asked, “What is meant by sacrifice?” Sacrifice means the giving up of something. We are singing about giving up our praises, our thanksgiving and our joy to God. People have the ability to appreciate what others do for them and yet keep it to themselves; not say anything. We are expressing our thanks and praise to God, not only for all He has and does do for us but also for Who He is. When we come to church we are sacrificing our time we might be doing something else. Most every choice we make involves a sacrifice of doing one thing instead of another thing. Our question is, how often are we willing to choose sacrificing the time God gives us to the worship, praise and service to Him?

Living Sacrifice

Ro 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship

With our triple digit temperatures we are having to get up before dawn to do our walking in the mornings.  Why do we do this?  In our sedentary world of push buttons and remotes our bodies do not get the exercise they need.  It is our responsibility to keep our bodies healthy and energetic for God to use.  In spite of the heat, I enjoy the walking early as the birds are waking up.  It is a good time to talk with God about the day ahead.  It is also a good time to appreciate God’s workmanship in His creation.  The early dawn, the sunrise, the bird songs all contribute to a worship experience.  After the walk and a cold cool-down (back into air conditioning) I am energized for the day ahead.  I’ve had time to listen to God for direction.  I am alive for God’s use here on this earth.  Our bodies are to be offered as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.  To do that we must take care of them by exercise, eating right and proper rest.  Ask yourself today what you might need to change to present your body to God as a living sacrifice.
