Give to Caesar or God

Luke 20:25 “Caesar’s,” they replied. He said to them, “Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s (The Holy Bible, New International Version.)

Even though the cross is in sight of Jesus, He continues teaching. The religious leaders continue trying to trap Him into saying the wrong thing. Here they are trying to get Jesus to say it is wrong to pay taxes – which money should go to the temple. We seem to think that the tithe is only about money. God already owns all in creation. He does not need anything. We do use money to maintain places to come together and worship and for things to help us learn. We also use money to give to others in need of food, housing, etc. But the tithe, what Jesus wants us to give to God, encompasses more than money. He wants our hearts, our minds and our time. None of that is really ours but we are in possessions of hearts mind and time because of His grace. He is asking us to be wise stewards of all of our being and give all to God through obedience and worship. We are to be honest in our taxes paying to our country what is due. We are also to be honest in our churches. We don’t go to church to see what we can get out of it or what it can do for us. We go to give ourselves to God. Yes, we give our money tithes and offerings but we must be sure we give our time and talents with a thankful heart to God for His allowing us to use the time and talents on this earth as we learn more of Him. Our question is what is our attitude in our giving of anything?

Exaltation

Luke 14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

We’re probably all familiar with the adage “pride goeth before a fall. Pride produces over confidence. Over confidence can quite often lead to careless mistakes. We really have nothing to be prideful about. There is nothing good we can do without the gifts, grace and mercy of our God. We can’t even take our next breath unless He wills it. I know very well I can’t write these devotions on my own. It is only through prayer, meditation and listening to the still and calm voice of God through His Holy Spirit that any words concerning scripture or God can come through me. We like to take credit because we want to feel good about ourselves. The only goodness in us is through the gift and mercy of God. When we think we have done a good job at something let us learn to thank God for doing it through us. It is He Who gives us talent, wisdom and physical ability. It is God Who alone is worthy of exhalation. During the rest of this Lenten season let us be sure to exalt Him. When someone praises us let us be sure to pass that praise on to God.

Boast of God

Jer 9:23-24  This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD

We humans like to show how wise we are.  We boast of any of our perceived assets be it strength, money, artistic talent or intellect.  We falsely think our goodness come from our own being.  It is God who gives us our abilities.  We are to boast of God’s love, faithfulness, righteousness, provision, kindness, and justice to us.  The one thing I know without a doubt – apart from God I am nothing and can do nothing of any value.  Unless He gives me words and meaning I have nothing to say or write.  It is only by His grace that I am even on this earth.  It is He Who numbers my breaths and heartbeats.  When we are complimented about something we should give God the credit and thank Him for allowing us to be part of it.  We should give each day He gives us back to Him for Him to use us for His glory and purpose.  I can boast of God.  What a mighty God.  What a loving God.  Great is God and His Son, Jesus Christ.
