Joshua 4:21-22. He told the Israelites, “When your children someday ask their fathers, What do these stones represent? explain to your children, Israel crossed the Jordan River on dry ground.

Why is it significant to us today that Israel crossed the Jordan River on dry ground. It shows us that, as it was safe for them to follow God into the wilderness it is also safe for us to follow God wherever His Holy Spirit leads us. When we walk in obedience to God there is nothing to fear. That doesn’t mean we will never have trials but that God will lead us through our trials. The question is will we look for His leading or fret and complain about the trial. The Bible is full of examples how God leads and how are job is to follow in an attitude of praise and thanksgiving. If you are walking through a trial right now I pray you might look for God’s leading with faith and trust that leads to praise and thanks to God,

Exodus 3:14. God said to Moses, “ I am that I am.”

Hebrews 13:8. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever!

Change is something we know well. We change our behavior to fit the occasion. We expect others to do the same. We even expect God to change according to our own self-interest desires. We want God to conform to our perceived needs and wants. The idea of us changing to His image makes us whimper and groan, “It’s too hard. It’s impossible.” We think it takes our power and ability to adjust ourselves to God. It is the work of the Holy Spirit to adjust our hearts and mind to God and His ways. Our only job is a willingness to allow Him to do so. We are to look to Him and obey Him through all circumstances. We are to trust His workings in and through us. Without acknowledging Jesus Christ as our Lord and Redeemer this trust is impossible. Without Him we remain rigid and un-moldable. Our question is will we allow ourselves to become pliable to God’s molding of us and stop trying to mold God to our own concepts of Him? He is so much more than our finite minds can ever contain. He wants to re-mold us into His Image, an image beyond our finite understanding. Let us say and mean the words in the old hymn, “Have Thine own way Lord….mold me and shape me after The will.”

Deny Self

Matthew 16:24. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

How many times a day do we use the words, “my, mine, me, or I?” Probably more times than we can count. Most of us aren’t even aware when we use those words. In denying ourselves Jesus means for us to put Him first and then others. This is the way to JOY (Jesus, Others, Yourself). This is the way God created us to be but when sin entered mankind self became our dominate and primary concern. So many times in conversation with others instead of really listening to them we are busy thinking about what we want to say. We are preoccupied with ourselves. It takes trust in God’s faithfulness to deny ourselves and put Him and others first. Our question is do we want to be obedient in this enough to ask God to empower us with His Holy Spirit to deny ourselves and trust Him with our needs?

As Children

Matthew 18:3. and said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn around and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven!

To understand this statement we must look at how little children think. Little children are trusting. They trust their parents will provide all their needs. They trust their parents will protect them. They watch their parents to imitate what the parents do. They copy what the parents say in the same tone of voice. We all know where this takes us. Our question is are we being God’s little chid? Do we really trust His provision, His protection? Do we try to imitate what Jesus did when He walked this earth as the Son of Man? Do we speak what God says in His written word, the Holy Bible? I don’t know about you but I must admit I act more like a teenager sometimes being rebellious, disobedient and self-centered.

First Last

1 Kings 17:13. Elijah said to her, “Dont be afraid. Go and do as you planned. But first make a small cake for me and bring it to me; then make something for yourself and your son.

That is quite a request. Take care of another’s need before you take care of your own. The world says take care of number one first. Scripture says in Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into your lap. For the measure you use will be the measure you receive.” It does not say as is given to you you shall give. We are more concerned with ourselves than with our obedience to God. This is a sign of lack of trust. God also tells us in John 12:25, “The one who loves his life destroys it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards it for eternal life.” Notice the word “his” before “life.” It does not say we should not love life but we should not love our own life on this earth above eternal life with God. Our eternal life begins when we accept Jesus, God’s Son, as Lord and Savior and endeavor to walk in obedience with Him. The widow gave first to God through Elijah and God provided sufficient for her and her son.

Walking in Faith

2 Kings 3:16-17. and he said, “This is what the Lord says, Make many cisterns in this valley, for this is what the Lord says, You will not feel any wind or see any rain, but this valley will be full of water and you and your cattle and animals will drink.

The people needed water. They hadn’t seen rain in a long time. They prayed for rain. God instructed them to show their faith by digging cisterns to catch the rain. They did this in spite of no sign of rain coming. They did this in obedience to God and faith that He is true to His word of supplying their needs. Our question is when we pray and ask God do we pray in faith? Do we live according to the assurance that God will indeed answer our prayers and supply our needs? Let’s get really honest with ourselves about our faith level and obedience level. Honesty will open us up to the workings of God’s Holy Spirit to water and fertilize the seed of faith in us and bring it growth.

Need to Know

Acts 1:7. He told them, “You are not permitted to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.

We are curious people. That is why gossip is such a problem.  We want to know everything about everything. The disciples were no exception.  They were already corrected about their curiosity of what would happen to someone else (John 21:22).  Now they wanted to know when Jesus would return to establish His Kingdom on earth.  God wants our trust.  Knowledge about what He will do and when has no bearing on what He will do or when.  We have enough trouble walking with Him in consistently love and obedience.  There is much talk about end times.  Instead of that we should be about learning how to reflect His Image and increase His family.  We should live as if the next breath we take will be our last before we are u tied with Him.  Our question is what do we want our last worst, thoughts and/or actions to be before God brings us home?

Faith or Doubt

Matthew 28:17. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted.

As many times as the saw Jesus during those 40 days some were still doubting.  The doubters were among the worshipers.  That is still true today.  There are many doubters in our churches.  There are many doubters who claim to be Christians.  Occasionally doubt can sneak into the mind of any believer.  The disciples were still without the witness of the Holy Spirit.  We don’t have that excuse.  When we find doubt trying to invade our mind we must put on the full armor of God. (Ephesians 6:14-16)  Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness, by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace and in all of this, by taking up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Belief is a choice.  Job is a good example when he said, “though He slay me yet will I trust Him,”. Our question is do we choose faith and trust or will we feed on doubt?  Is faith what others hear coming from our mouth or do we feed doubt by giving them voice?

Bold Faith

Matthew 8:26. But he said to them, “Why are you cowardly, you people of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was dead calm.

Some of our college students wanted to be baptized so we went to the beach.  There was a storm surge so they were baptized many times on the way out to be baptized.  Those of us on the beach were quietly praying for the ocean to calm.  None of us spoke the words out loud.  Nothing happened.  The waves kept ragging.  On the way back to our house we talked about the lack of power.  Our youth minister ask is any of us had spoken out loud.  Out quietness showed a lack of faith.  While heading home the girls decided they wanted to be baptized also.  We furnished them with swim suits and headed back to the beach.  The storm surge was still present.  As the girls went into the ocean we spoke in a loud voice for the waters to be calm.  The waves calmed in a semi-circle following the girls out.  After they were baptized in calm waters an were coming in the waves followed behind them.  When they were back on the beach the storm surge was back in full furry.  We learned true faith must be outwardly displayed.  We have experienced His power many times since then as we speak out with boldness.  The question is will you trust God enough to speak His word with boldness?

Ask for Wisdom

James 1:5. But if anyone is deficient in wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without reprimand, and it will be given to him.

Don’t have wisdom?  Ask God.  He will give us wisdom to use the knowledge we have received as we search His written word.  There is one thing we are told.  (James 1:6-7) “But he must ask in faith without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed around by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord,”. We must believe God’s faithful to do what He promises.  Wisdom is built on knowledge.  As we do our part,God will  do His part.  He has given us all we need.  We have His written words of wisdom in the Holy Bible.  We have His Holy Spirit to interpret the meaning of those words to us. We have brothers and sisters in the family of God to gather with and encourage each other through sharing the knowledge and wisdom we receive.  I walk in trust God gives me wisdom to write these devotions.  Will you also walk in trust?  He is faithful to give you the wisdom to share the knowledge with others n the way He calls you’ve it writing, speaking, helping, leading, healing or any other ministry.
