Truth

Deuteronomy 7:9. So realize that the Lord your God is the true God, the faithful God who keeps covenant faithfully with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

We use the word “true” in reference to factual. We mean that something us a fact. When God says He is truth He means much more than a fact. God is real. God encompasses all that is. Apart from God there is no reality. Nothing can alter or change the reality or truth of God. Facts as we know them can change with the change of time or circumstances. God never changes. His truth is eternal. God is eternal. The question is why does this definition matter to us? For us to be more than a fact that can change with time or circumstances we must be inside the truth of God; we must be one in Him. The only way we can do that is through His Son, Jesus. It is through believing in Him an emersing ourselves in Him. We emerge in reading and studying scripture, praying, meditation and sharing with others who desire to come into oneness with God and through Him, oneness with each other.

True Worship

John 4:23. But a time is coming and now is here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.

Our worship of God is not dependent on churches, ministers, special days, icons or anything or anyone else. All these may help but they do not worship. The time has come for us to be able to worship any time or any place in spirit and truth because God has given us His Holy Spirit. He dwells within each believer so we can worship in spirit and truth. Our question is do we? Everywhere we go, all we see and all we do is an opportunity to worship. When is the last time you worshiped God by yourself? Take a worship walk or seek a quiet, solitary place. You need no one else with you. You have God’s Holy Spirit in you to worship in and through you. Corporate worship is great. It feeds us and encourages us. Private worship is precious. Give it a try today.

Little Children

1 John 3:18. Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.

John is not writing to little children here.  He is writing to adults who are acting like little children.  Before we judge these adults too harshly we must look at ourselves.  How many times have we verbally expressed  concern, sympathy or love for someone while thinking they are getting what they deserve?  John writes if we only express love with our words we are not speaking in truth.  Love is a verb of action.  If we only talk about verbs there is no action and the verbs become subjects.  A word of love must be followed with an action to be love.  Our question is are we willing to put action on our words of love?  We and do this by asking God hat it is He wants to do through us to express His love in each and every situation.

Where Are You

Genesis 3:9  But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?”

God still asks the same question of each of us.  “Where are we?”  God created us to have fellowship with Him.  He walked in the Garden of Eden to be with Adam and Eve.  They disobeyed Him and tried to hide from Him.  God sent Jesus to walk this earth to re-establish our fellowship with God.  We still try to hide from God.  We hide through our lies, our deceit, our pretence to be what we are not.  We hid in our failure to admit our failures.  We hid through work, through business, through efforts to look like more than we are.  In our hiding we only deceive ourselves and maybe some of those around us.  God sees us as we really are.  In spite of seeing us this way He still loves us.  He already knew what Adam and Eve did before He took His walk in the garden.  He wanted them to realize what they did.  He wanted genuine confession.  Instead of confession each one pointed blame somewhere else.  We are good at finding excuses or naming others as reasons for our failures.  God wants us to take responsibility for our own lack of fellowship with Him.  He sent Jesus to show us this.  Jesus stretched out His arms on the cross to take us into Him.  Our question is where are we with God and with ourselves?  As we prepare to celebrate the upcoming holidays let us also celebrate truthfulness with ourselves and with God.  We have nothing to lose by being trruthful as God already knows the truth and we have everything to gain.  Let us each ask God’s Holy Spirit to reveal our disobedience in thought, word and deed every day and start each day new with God in continual restored fellowship through His Son, Jesus, Christ.

True Worshipers

John 4:23   But a time is coming and now is here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.

Do we really worship in spirit and truth?  When we gather with other believers in church and sing do we really pay attention to the words we’re singing?  It is so easy to sing by memory and not really put ourselves into it or even realize what we are really singing.  When we join in prayer together are we paying attention and agreeing with what is being prayed or do we let our minds wander?  When we do our own personal devotional time at home are we fully attuned to what we are reading and praying or are we more concerned with what time it is and what we must do that day?  We cannot worship in spirit and truth without the help of God’s Holly Spirit.  Before we try to start to express our worship we need to ask God for a fresh in-filling of His Holy Spirit and enable us to worship Him.  We are so accustomed to multi-tasking throughout our days but our prayer and devotional and worship times cannot be multi-tasked.  These need our entire being, our heart, mind, emotions and body to be true worshipers in spirit and in truth.  Our question is do we want to be true worshipers?

Truth

1 Corthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful, It is not glad about injustice, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never ends.

Love rejoices in the truth.  What is truth?  We are told in John 1:14 “Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory – the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.”. God is truth.  All truth is contained in God the Father, God thr Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit.  Love rejoices in the truth.  That means live rejoices in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  When we maintain a spirit and attitude of rejoicing we fill ourselves with God’s love which produces the attributes we’ve been meditating in: patience, lack of envy, lack of bragging, lack of smugness or being puffed up about ourselves, lack of rudeness, lack of self-serving, lack of anger and resentment and not rejoicing when we see injustice, even when that injustice is against our presumed enemies.  This is quite a check list.  Without our minds, hearts and lives being emmersed in God, the truth, it is impossible for us to love.  Our question is, where is our rejoicing and what brings it forth?  Do we choose only to rejoice in God and His truth when things meet our own self-centered desires or do we choose to rejoice in our God in all things?  Once again the choice is ours.  I pray we will all choose to rejoice in our God throughout all our days regardless do what het days may hold.  He is God.  He is Truth.  He will have His way.

Delight

1Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. . It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. . Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. I was driving down a road being tailgated by someone. They couldn’t wait to pass even though I was going the maximum speed limit. They finally passed even though it was in an area were passing wasn’t allowed. As a rounded a curve I saw this driver pulled over with a sheriff’s car behind him. I laughed. I took delight in this driver’s being caught, not so much because it might be preventing an accident but because I delighted in seeing the driver getting into trouble. Later I asked God’s forgiveness for my attitude. As humans we tend to be attracted to evil. We see evil as fun and self-indulging. Truth and love are linked together. Love is truth. We cannot love in deceit. Our question is what gives us delight? Why do we want truth to win out over evil? We each need to take some time to meditate on this.

Advent 9

Ps 43:3 Send forth your light and your truth, a let them guide me;

We celebrate God’s sending His Light and Truth to mankind.  Until Jesus came, lived, ministered, died and rose we could not reach God.  Our sin stood in the way.  Jesus took our sin on Himself and showed us the love of God.  Many of us put candles in our windows during the Advent season.  The candles are a symbol of God’s light.  Light can illuminate truth.  During this season we prepare ourselves to see more of God’s light and know more of His truth.  We do this though prayer, meditation, studying His written word and following it in obedience.  Though this is a big benefit to ourselves and strengthens our faith, it is not for us alone that we do this.  Light is no good if it is not shared.  Let us be sure we share the light we have with those around us.  Let us be sure we look where the light shines for open doors to share the truth of God with others.
