Course Correction

1 John 1:7. But if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

How do we know if we are walking in God’s Light? This says we have fellowship with one another and we are cleansed from sin when we are in the Light. Being cleansed from sin means we have confessed our sins and repented. To repent we must turn away from that we were doing or thinking and turn toward God, our Light. When we see our fellowship is broken with someone it is a sign we are not walking in the Light. It’s time for a course correction. I know when I face God and see the path I have walked on this earth I’ll see it zig and zag through Light and darkness.
Our question is when we slip into the darkness will we choose to make the necessary course correction and face the Light of our God?

Know the Word

Genesis 3:1. Now the serpent was more shrewd than any of the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Is it really true that God fsaid, You must not eat from any tree of the orchard?”

The Holy Bible is the written word of God. All of it is truth since God is truth. Eve had a choice. She could quote what God said or she could listen to other voices alter God’s words just a little bit. Eve chose to listen and look. We are bombarded with choices every day. If we are armed with God’s word we will know what to choose. It is when we do not really know His word we get into trouble. In 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) we read, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” It is only in really knowing what God says that we can make choices and walk through doors that keep us in the center of God’s direction. Our question is do we want to walk closely with God enough to seriously study His word?

Holy Spirit Walks

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.”

After Jesus died on the cross, rose from death and ascended to the Father in Heaven God sent His Holy Spirit to walk this earth in and through the believers in Jesus, His Son, His Word. We receive the Holy Spirit in us the moment we invite Jesus into our hearts and minds as our Lord and Savior. It is the Holy Spirit Who gives us the power to walk as Jesus did-in full and continuous fellowship and obedience to God the Father. Our question is do we really want to walk that way? We are so intent on our own comfort and desires that we tend to choose not to hear and obey the gentle nudging of the Holy Spirit within us. How did Jesus do it? He spent hours drawing apart from others to talk things over with the Father. How much time do we spend in conversation with the Father? We are good at telling Him what we want but how about listening to what He wants? We have one mouth and 2 ears. Let us talk half as much as we listen to our God.

The Word

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God.
John 1:14 Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory-the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.

This earth went a very long time without God’s physical presence. Finally He sent His Word to walk this earth in the same physical characteristics we share. His Word, His Son, Jesus left the side of His Father to humble Himself as a baby of a poor couple to walk where we walk and experience the temptations we experiences. He was fully God as He walked this earth but also, at the same time, fully man with the same physical needs and emotions we experience. The big difference is He walked and experienced life on this earth in the way God originally designed. Jesus walked with God the Father and without sin. He showed us we are to walk on this earth in complete fellowship with the Father, speaking and living His love and peace to all we meet in our walk. Our question is are we willing to expend the time and effort to read and study how Jesus walked and talked on this earth? He is our example. He is the One we are to imitate. The word “Christian” means “little Christ’ A little girl will imitate what she hears and sees her mother do when the girl plays with her dolls. Will we imitate what we read Jesus did and said?

Walking in the Garden

Genesis 3:8. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God moving about in the orchard at the breezy time of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the orchard.

When we create something we like to look at and admire it from time to time. God is the same. He moved about in the Garden of Eden in a way that could be seen and heard by the people He created. He apparently enjoyed His walks and visits with them as He called out to them. But sin had entered into His creation and God cannot be in the presence of sin. Actually, sin cannot stand in the presence of God. Sin must try to hide itself from God’s Light. God no longer walked or moved in His creation in a way mankind could hear or see. Generations of mankind would come and go with just but a few being able to hear God. Our question is what sin are we trying to hide from God? As He knew where Adam and Eve were and what they had done, God already knows what sin we are hiding in our hearts and minds. Let us be open and honest with ourselves and confess to ourselves our sin so we may be cleansed and forgiven. As we’ll read later, we no longer need by away from the Presence of our God.

Walking in Faith

2 Kings 3:16-17. and he said, “This is what the Lord says, Make many cisterns in this valley, for this is what the Lord says, You will not feel any wind or see any rain, but this valley will be full of water and you and your cattle and animals will drink.

The people needed water. They hadn’t seen rain in a long time. They prayed for rain. God instructed them to show their faith by digging cisterns to catch the rain. They did this in spite of no sign of rain coming. They did this in obedience to God and faith that He is true to His word of supplying their needs. Our question is when we pray and ask God do we pray in faith? Do we live according to the assurance that God will indeed answer our prayers and supply our needs? Let’s get really honest with ourselves about our faith level and obedience level. Honesty will open us up to the workings of God’s Holy Spirit to water and fertilize the seed of faith in us and bring it growth.

Need to Know

Acts 1:7. He told them, “You are not permitted to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.

We are curious people. That is why gossip is such a problem.  We want to know everything about everything. The disciples were no exception.  They were already corrected about their curiosity of what would happen to someone else (John 21:22).  Now they wanted to know when Jesus would return to establish His Kingdom on earth.  God wants our trust.  Knowledge about what He will do and when has no bearing on what He will do or when.  We have enough trouble walking with Him in consistently love and obedience.  There is much talk about end times.  Instead of that we should be about learning how to reflect His Image and increase His family.  We should live as if the next breath we take will be our last before we are u tied with Him.  Our question is what do we want our last worst, thoughts and/or actions to be before God brings us home?

Acts 1:4. While he was with them, he declared, “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait there for what my Father promised, which you heard about from me

The last instruction Jesus gave was to wait in Jerusalem for the fulfilling of the promise of the Holy Spirit.  At first the disciples were content to worship and pray together. But then they decided the should replace Judas.  We read (Acts 1:26.) “Then they cast lots for them, and the one chosen was Matthias; so he was counted with the eleven apostles.”  They didn’t have the guidance of the Holy Spirit yet and resorted to their old methods of casting lots.  We don’t hear about Mathis again. God would be choosing Paul to replace Judas.  Before we judge the disciples too harshly for their impatience and taking matters into their own hands we must look at our own record.  How many times have we pushed ahead of the Holy Spirit’s leading?  Many times I’ve forced open doors that were shut.  That usually creates more problems than it solves.  Jesus never rushed.  Our question is will we wait for God’s direction in prayer nd use our impatient energy to obey quickly after we receive His direction?  We do the walking but God directs our steps and timing.

Jealous God

Exodus 20:5. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me,

God is jealous.  He will not stand for anyone or anything to be held or favored over Him.  We say we don’t bow to anyone or anything other than God.  We must be honest and look at our priorities.  There are many things and sometimes people we put before our worship, obedience and/or love for God.  Just to list a few: sports, entertainment, food, ourselves.  We probably fluctuate in and out but we all do it.  What do we read the most?  Who do we talk to the most?  I think we all get the idea so what do we do about it?  We are week when it comes to temptations.  We must depend on God’s Holy Spirit.  As we learn to listen throughout each day we will hear more distinctly, “This us the way.”  Our question is do we want to love Him above all else?  God, help us hear, obey and grow in our love for You.

John 13:7  Jesus replied, “You do not understand what I am doing now, but you will understand after these things.”

When I was a small child and one of my parents would tell me to do something or even not do something I would always ask why.  Their usual answer was “Because I told you so.”  Even though God has said we are to become as little children He was not talking about our demand to know why on many things.  He wants us to obey His Word through trust, not through understanding.  He wants us to accept in faith His direction and His protection in our walk on this earth.  We need to understand what He tells us but not the why.  The why is not necessary for obedience.  When we walk through a trial quite often we walk out with an understanding as to what God wanted us to learn in that trial.  We need the trusts of a little trial to be glad, to consider it joy, when God gives us an opportunity to grow deeper, learn more and understand more of His love and power.  Our question is are we willing to give up or demand to know why before we walk it out in obedience and trust?  He promises in the right time we will understand.
