The Word

John 1:1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God.

To understand the full meanings of this verse we must understand “word.” A “word” is a means of expressing a thought. In the beginning God was expressing His thoughts. Through His “word” or expression of His thoughts all things were created. But part of His creation (man) refused to listen to God’s direction. Man lost the listening ear to the Word. So God’s direction Word became flesh to dwell with us and let us see His “word” with our eyes and hear with our carnal, physical ears. The Word sacrificed Himself for us so we could have His Holt Spirit dwell in us to hear His Word again. Our question is are we willing to stop and listen? He is continually speaking. Let us learn to continually listen.

Psalms 19:14. May my words and my thoughts be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my sheltering rock and my redeemer.

We hear this scripture prayed before many sermons. It is a good one for all of us to pray the first thing every morning. We are asking God to help us guard the words that come out of our mouths. We are asking for each word to be acceptable to Him. Not only the words we speak but every thought we have are to be acceptable to God. God is love. For all our words and thoughts to be acceptable to God they must be spoken and thought with love. This is not love for self, our own wants, desires or ways and pride. Thos is the love of God for all expletive. Our question is do we really want to speak only these. Words and think only these thoughts? To be honest sometimes we like to think bad thoughts about someone who has hurt our feelings. We don’t want to be forgiving right away. We even want to speak evil of them to others. Let us start prating this scripture throughout each day and ask God’s Holy Spirit to help us really mean it.

Little Children

1 John 3:18. Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue but in deed and truth.

John is not writing to little children here.  He is writing to adults who are acting like little children.  Before we judge these adults too harshly we must look at ourselves.  How many times have we verbally expressed  concern, sympathy or love for someone while thinking they are getting what they deserve?  John writes if we only express love with our words we are not speaking in truth.  Love is a verb of action.  If we only talk about verbs there is no action and the verbs become subjects.  A word of love must be followed with an action to be love.  Our question is are we willing to put action on our words of love?  We and do this by asking God hat it is He wants to do through us to express His love in each and every situation.

Isaiah 11:10  At that time a root from Jesse will stand like a signal flag for the nations. Nations will look to him for guidance, and his residence will be majestic.

The Hebrews have been looking for their promised Messiah to come for generations.  Why did Jesus come when He did?  Rome defeated the Hebrews quite some time ago.  There were many season of civil wars and unrest.  Now all was quiet.  Travel was good without need of visas.  Roads were good.  Hebrews were allowed to practice their religion as long as they obeyed the Roman government and paid their taxes.  It was a period in history were the Messiah was free to travel without restraint.  Many countries and races passed through Jerusalem and the region.  God set history to be ready for His Son to come and show all mankind the way.  It was at a time when the Word made flesh in the person of Jesus could be taken through the known world.  Hearts were ready.  The right people were in place.  Hearts are still ready today.  Our question is are we willing to be the right people   to share God’s Word, Jesus, with others?

Word Spoken

Psalms 139:4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.

How often we “put our foot in our mouth” by saying a word we shouldn’t say?  I know I have on numerous times,  Once a word is spoken it can’t be taken back.  God has provided a solution for what I call “foot in mouth disease.”. He says He knows our words before they form in our mouth.  The question is are we willing to slow down our words enough to listen to Him?  It doesn’t take long if we really want to hear.  I’m getting better on listening before speaking it but I still get it in my mind and heart and speak it softly to myself.  As I do this I sence God correcting me.  With practice I will become better at wanting to hear God than I want to think and say the word I shouldn’t.  It is usually a word that would make somebody hurt or feel bad. It could be a word of gossip.  There are many things that word could be that we would regret after hearing from God.  Would it not be better to listen to God first before saying or even thinking the word?

A Good Book

Psalms 119:11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

I just finished reading a very good book. It was one of those books that’s hard to put down. When I finish reading a book like that I miss it. I wish there were more of it to read. I have an even better book I read. Sometimes it’s very hard to put it down. No matter how many times I read it I always find something I missed the last time. I can read it cover to cover and yet there is always something new. This book is called “The Holy Bible.” If it were the only book every written nothing would be lacking. Other books are nice, entertaining, informative but none of them can be read as many times as the Bible and always bring us to a new truth. If the Bible is not our first picked, most read book we are probably reading a version using words we don’t relate with. There are many translations of this magnificent book. We can go to a bookstore or on the Internet and read various versions to find the one, which is written in our manner of speaking. It is also good for us to have several different translations. Our question is do we really believe this book is written by God through His Holy Spirit? Do we really want to read what He has to tell us? Do we really understand it is His love letter to us? Before I was married we lived in separate states. Long distance calls were expensive so we wrote letters to each other every day, sometimes 2 a day. When I got the letters I would read them over and over. My love was so intense I wanted to take in every word and make it part of me. How intense is our love for God and His Word?

John 3:20-21 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” (The Holy Bible, New International Version)

Jesus spoke often about light and salt. He tells us we who believe and follow Him are the light of the world and we are to shine. In actuality it Is God’s Light that fills us believers and we are to allow it to shine through us. Light shines to the outside. It benefits no one if it only shines within itself. Light makes it possible for us to see dirt. It makes it possible to see options and also stumbling blocks. People tend to prefer darkness. We don’t want to see the dirt in our lives and hearts. How do we turn on the Light to see the darkness within ourselves? We get into God’s Word. God’s Word if Life and Light. When we get into His Word we realize how dirty we are. When we allow His Light to sine on our dirt we are then able to confess it, turn away from it and walk in obedience and fellowship with God. Our question is are we willing to let our light shine on our thoughts, words and actions as well as allow others to see what God’s light shines on in our lives and there’s?

Ru 1:2 The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion.  They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there

Decisions determine destiny.  Our life tomorrow will be the direct result of the decisions we make today.  I encourage you to read the entire book of Ruth.  It’s not very long.  Namoi and Elimelech were Hebrews.  Hebrews were given the promised land and dwelled in Bethlehem.  They were not to leave the land God gave them.  When things got tough, instead of trusting God’s promise, they left for a foreign land – a land were God was not worshiped or honored.  This decision was based on their own rational thinking rather than God’s word.  Things became a lot harder for them in the foreign land.  Read and learn what they experienced.  Don’t judge them too harshly.  We do the same they do.  We look at a problem and think we are wise enough to make a decision on our own.  We fail to ask God what He wants us to do.  Then, when things get harder, we ask God to bail us out.  There are a few things we must remember to do:

  1. When we make decisions based on human rationale instead on God’s Wore we miss out on God’s blessings.  Grass looks greener
  2. We are stuck with the consequences  – Elimelech died.
  3. Others stuck with consequences – sons married Moabites.  Sons died,

Decisions determine destiny.  Learn God’s Word.  Learn to pray and to listen and recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Who Will You Follow

Ro 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is  —his good, pleasing land perfect will.

There is a strong movement in several Christian denominations to conform their beliefs to the beliefs of the world.  They are claiming that all of God’s commands in the Bible are not relevant in today’s world.  They have decided the can choose to keep what they like and toss out what they don’t like.  They’re major concern is numbers of members and amount of money not being dedicated to God and to obedience to His Word.  God told us through Jesus that we are to be the light of the world.  We are to set the standards and be the example and encourage the world to desire to follow God’s way.  The question is do we choose to let God set our standard and follow Him or do we choose to fit into the changing world standards and follow the world?  Decide today whom you will choose.
