One Feeds the Other

Psalms 132:7. We will go into his tabernacles; We will worship at his footstool.

What is church? Church is a building with a large room that reminds us we must make a large room for worship in our daily life. When we gather in that large room with other believers and enter into collective worship we feed and encourage one another to continue in worship daily. So often my ears tune to a devotion God is giving me to write through a word spoken by someone during our coming together as a body of believers. Group worship feeds individual, daily worship and individual, daily worship feeds group worship. Both are essential for our devotion to God. Let us determine to grow daily through our worship, study and meditations.

Need to Worship

Deuteronomy 30:17-18a: But if thy heart turn away, and thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish;

We were created to worship. If we don’t worship God we will find someone or something to worship. That worship will not satisfy our created need for worshiping God. Not only will it not satisfy our need, God will denounce us and we will be left to perish. We debase ourselves when we don’t worship our only and only Creator, God. Worship is a privilege given to mankind at creation. Worship is something we need do daily to fulfill our spirits which were reborn in us when we accepted God’s only Son, Jesus Christ, into our minds, hearts and life as our Savior and the Lord of our life.

Present in Worship

Matthew 15:9. But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.

Worship can only come from the heart. We can go through the motions and words of worship and not be worshiping. We can sing a song of worship and be thinking critical thoughts about someone else’s singing instead of putting all our thoughts on what we are singing and to Whom we are singing. In our fast-passed life we can be impatient in our worship wanting to move onto something else rather than bask in the love that can flow back and forth in true worship. Let’s be honest. We’ ex all experienced the challenges of keeping our thoughts and hearts on what we are doing in the present rather than thinking about the next thing. Today let us take a moment by ourselves in quiet and sing or say a song or scripture directly to God expressing our love for Him.

Reverence and Adoration

Psalms 100:2. Worship the Lord with joy! Enter his presence with joyful singing!

Worship is defined as the feeling or expression of reverence or adoration. Reverence is defined as profound respect and esteem mingled with fear. Adoration is the act of paying honor to someone. Our question is are these attributes reflected in and through us when we gather with fellow believers to worship our God? Reverence is expressed quietly but adoration is expressed with joyful exuberance. We need a combination of both to fully worship our God. David was criticized by his wife for jumping and dancing with exuberance before the Ark of the Covenant but he was a man after God’s own heart. Will we hide our exuberance for fear of criticism from others or will God know us as children after His own heart? Let us be true worshipers.

Romans 12:11. Do not lag in zeal, be enthusiastic in spirit, serve the Lord.

Go into quite a few churches and look for zeal or enthusiasm. Their hard to find. Go into any stadium or sports arena and you will see plenty zeal and enthusiasm. Something is very wrong with our values. A game lasts but for a little while. After a short time it will be forgotten. Our worship and praise of God will resound in heaven for all eternity. We, if we are followers of Jesus Christ, will be in the midst of the praises we have expressed when we enjoy the very real presence of our God and Creator for all eternity. Our question is where should we be most enthusiastic and show the most zeal; a sporting event or in a church? Let us be zealous and enthusiastic in praising and serving our God.

Growing Old

Psalms 92:14. They bear fruit even when they are old; they are filled with vitality and have many leaves.

I hear so many people in their older years say there is nothing new, they have read and studied the Bible all they need to, they have grown spiritually all they need to, they have served God all they need. They seem to think they have laurels to sit on and the younger people should take over. How sad for them. As a living being we either continue to grow or we shrivel and die. Growing and serving are bring life. We can never grow into the likeness of our Creator too much or serve Him enough. Regardless of our physical condition there is always some service we can do for the glory of our God. I am always so blessed when I see people who have to struggle just to walk into church come and join believers of all ages to worship God and encourage each other. I am blessed with confidence when I know a 90+ person is interceding on my behalf. Our question is how will we choose to age? We can become all-knowing and self-centered or we can continue to grow into the image of our Creator. The choice is ours.

Acceptable Sacrifice

Isaiah 1:11. “Of what importance to me are your many sacrifices?” says the Lord. “I am stuffed with burnt sacrifices of rams and the fat from steers. The blood of bulls, lambs, and goats I do not want.

This verse can’t possibly apply to us. We don’t do animal sacrifices. What about sitting in church and going through the movements of worship when our minds and/or hearts or elsewhere. Maybe we’re thinking about what someone’s wearing, what someone said to us or did to us or where we’re going to eat after. Maybe we’re looking at our watches wondering how much longer. If our mind’s on anything except God this verse applies to us. Admit it. We’ve all been guilty. Offering the sacrifice of praise means putting all else aside and praising God with all our heart, mind and body. Our question is do we really want to put our praise and worship of God ahead of all else? Hoe about trying it for just one hour? Start small and grow.

Prepare for Worship

Psalms 29:2. Acknowledge the majesty of the Lord s reputation! Worship the Lord in holy attire!

Many interpret this verse to mean dress up in special clothes. It is not our clothes that fit us for worship. It is our spiritual attire. If there is un-confessed sin, resentment or bitterness in our hearts we are not attired to worship. We cannot worship God with sin in our heart. We must allow His Holy Spirit to cleanse us and refill us, renewing us in His love and worshiping God in humble thankfulness putting on the righteousness of Jesus Christ. It is God’s grace and the love and righteousness of His Son that gives us the privilege of worshiping Him. Our question is how often do we prepare and avail ourselves to worship God in Spirit and truth?

True Worship

John 4:23. But a time is coming and now is here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people to be his worshipers.

Our worship of God is not dependent on churches, ministers, special days, icons or anything or anyone else. All these may help but they do not worship. The time has come for us to be able to worship any time or any place in spirit and truth because God has given us His Holy Spirit. He dwells within each believer so we can worship in spirit and truth. Our question is do we? Everywhere we go, all we see and all we do is an opportunity to worship. When is the last time you worshiped God by yourself? Take a worship walk or seek a quiet, solitary place. You need no one else with you. You have God’s Holy Spirit in you to worship in and through you. Corporate worship is great. It feeds us and encourages us. Private worship is precious. Give it a try today.

Above All Else

Colossians 3:1. Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Keep seeking the things above. What things are above? God the Father and God the Son, Jesus, are seated above. We are to seek them and all they are: love, joy peace, faithfulness, goodness, etc. Our question is what do we really seek. Our prayers sound like we seek the hand of God rather than seeking Him. We pray,God do this, fix this, I need this. We seek what God can do for us instead of seeking Him. God says in Matthew 6:33 to seek His Kingdom first and all things will be given to us. There is nothing wrong with asking God for our needs but let’s keep our priorities straight. Let us seek God before all else. Let us seek to express our love and devotion for Who He is over what we can get from Him. God is worthy to be praised and worshiped above all else.
